The SRS mourns the loss of Dr. Murray Johns, who passed away on January 2, 2025. Dr. Johns will be remembered as one of Australia’s early pioneers in the sleep field, becoming the first person in Australia to undertake a PhD in adult sleep medicine. Dr. Johns, alongside Alfred Hospital faculty, helped set up an experimental sleep laboratory in the Monash Department of Surgery, where a sleep monitoring system was developed for recording patients’ sleep in hospital wards and the intensive care unit. Generations of researchers and clinicians will recognize and appreciate Dr. Johns’ legacy.
