Dr. Vincent Zarcone Jr., Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Emeritus) at the Stanford University School of Medicine passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2024. Dr. Zarcone was a pioneer in the field of sleep medicine and, along with Dr. William C. Dement, started the first sleep clinic in the world at Stanford University in 1970, initially evaluating and treating patients with narcolepsy. In addition to his clinical work as a sleep medicine physician and psychiatrist, he conducted numerous research studies focused on sleep and sleep disorders, with a particular interest in the relationships of sleep, sleep deprivation, and psychiatric disorders, specifically schizophrenia.
