DARIEN, IL – The Sleep Research Society Foundation is expanding its educational efforts through a partnership with HMP Global’s Psych Congress, emphasizing the critical intersection of sleep and mental health. Future conference sessions will integrate sleep and circadian science into mental health education, equipping psychiatry professionals with diagnostic and treatment strategies for co-occurring sleep and psychiatric disorders.
SRS Foundation supports sleep and circadian research through education and funding opportunities, while HMP Global is a leader in health care education and events. Together, they will provide psychiatry professionals with essential knowledge in addressing sleep disorders in their patients.
“By expanding the Psych Congress programming to include sleep and circadian science alongside mental health, we are bridging critical gaps in care,” said Philip Gehrman, who has a doctorate in clinical psychology and is president of the SRS Foundation. “This expanded partnership underscores our shared commitment to advancing a more holistic approach to mental well-being, where sleep health is recognized as an integral component of overall mental health treatment and recovery.”
Research shows that nearly 50% of insomnia cases are related to depression, anxiety or psychological stress, and multiple psychiatric disorders — including post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and substance use disorders — are linked to sleep disturbances. Through this collaboration, SRS Foundation will provide expertise to enhance educational programs, ensuring that mental health professionals have the knowledge and tools to integrate sleep-focused care into clinical practice.
The educational program will feature leading faculty, including Gehrman, Dr. Rakesh Jain, and Dr. Emmanuel Mignot, with sessions that address key areas such as:
- Mastering Insomnia: Evidence-Based Strategies for Psychiatry
This session will explore the bidirectional relationship between sleep and mental health, covering insomnia assessment, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, and practical strategies for integrating sleep care into psychiatric practice. - Disorders of Wakefulness: Understanding Hypersomnia, Narcolepsy, and Beyond in Psychiatric Patients
Faculty will provide a comprehensive overview of hypersomnia syndromes, their overlap with psychiatric conditions, and assessment strategies and treatment options, including the role of wake-promoting agents.
By deepening its involvement in professional education, the SRS Foundation is reinforcing the importance of sleep health as a cornerstone of mental well-being.
