Introducing Nalaka S. Gooneratne, M.D., M.Sc., the current Vice-Chair of the Sleep Research Network: 

A dedicated expert in sleep medicine and aging, Dr. Gooneratne brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to his field.  

Highlights of his work:  

  • Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Board-certified Sleep Disorders Medicine physician with expertise in aging-related sleep health.

Research Focus:  

  • Behavioral approaches for insomnia in older adults.
  • Cognitive benefits of sleep apnea treatments for the elderly.
  • Clinical Expertise: Leads a specialized Sleep Disorders Clinic focusing on sleep in older adults.

Leadership Roles:  

  • Director of the Master’s in Translational Research program (Entrepreneurship track).
  • Oversees the ITMAT mHealth Mobile App/Device Service for innovative health tech.
  • Speaker at national conferences, advocating for better sleep health in aging populations.
