SRS NIH Grant Reviewer Training Program

The goal of the SRS NIH Grant Reviewer Training Program is to prepare Early Career Investigators (ECI) to become effective reviewers for NIH and other grant-awarding institutions. After 5 virtual didactic sessions, the ECI will be equipped with knowledge on the NIH review process and best practices for constructing quality reviews. The sixth and final session will be held at SLEEP 2026 and will take the form of a mock study session. Participants will complete the program with the knowledge to participate in an NIH peer-review process and improved grant writing skills.

Eligibility Guidelines

  • ECIs at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level
  • Individuals from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Evidence of an existing program of research
  • Career goals include a substantial commitment to original investigation
  • Peer-reviewed, scientific publications of original research
  • Prior research funding as principal or co-investigator. This may include foundation or federal funding, for either career development or research project grants. Pilot funding from the ECI’s institution may be considered adequate prior funding.
  • Formal application (linked above), including bio sketch, statement of prior review experience, 100-250 word statement of interest.

Program Schedule

Participants are required to attend each session. Only those who can commit to all 6 dates will be accepted. Virtual sessions are listed in CT; in-person session is in ET (Baltimore, MD).

  • Session 1 – Friday, March 6, 2026: 12 to 2pm CT, Overview of the NIH review process with Dr. Sara Nowakowski
  • Session 2 – Friday, March 20, 2026: 12 to 2pm CT, Nuts & Bolts of Reviewing Part 1 – Constructing quality reviews with Dr. Philip Cheng
  • Session 3 – Friday, March 27, 2026: 12 to 2pm CT, Nuts & Bolts of Reviewing Part 2 – Preparing for review with Dr. Philip Cheng
  • Session 4 – Friday, April 24, 2026: 11am to 1pm CT, Review and critique of Summary Statements
  • Session 5 – Friday, May 22, 2026: 11am to 1pm CT, Review ECI’s written reviews of NIH applications
  • Session 6 – Saturday, June 13, 2026: 12pm to 5pm ET, Mock Study Section @ SLEEP 2026 (In-person session in Baltimore)
