Free state-of-the-science webinar will be held Monday, Nov. 3
DARIEN, IL – The Sleep Research Society Foundation is hosting a state-of-the-science webinar, “Orexin: the master integrator,” from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. EST on Monday, Nov. 3. Registration for the webinar is free.
The webinar will explore orexin science with a focus on its complex physiological roles across the body, learned experiences from orexin antagonism, and anticipation of orexin agonists. Attendees will discover the critical role of the orexin system in sleep and circadian science and learn about its impact on mental health, feeding, metabolism and more.
“The orexin system represents a fascinating frontier in neuroscience, with potential to shift the paradigm of how we conceptualize the integration of multiple physiological systems,” said Philip Cheng, who has a doctorate in clinical psychology and is president of the SRS Foundation. “We are at the dawn of understanding how orexin may drive behavior across a wide spectrum of human health and disease.”
Presenters will also discuss the potential impact of gender differences, the relationship to sex hormones, and intersections with the endocannabinoid system and exogenous cannabinoids. The discussion will highlight clinical pearls for health care professionals and will conclude with the identification of potential research opportunities.
The chair of the webinar will be Dr. Anne Marie Morse, director of child neurology and pediatric sleep medicine at Janet Weis Children’s Hospital within the Geisinger Health System in Danville, Pennsylvania. The panelists will be:
- Dr. Craig Chepke, scientific director of Psych Congress, adjunct associate professor of psychiatry at Atrium Health, and medical director of Excel Psychiatric Associates in Huntersville, North Carolina
- Professor Gert Jan Lammers, professor of neurology and chair of sleep disorders at Leiden University in the Netherlands
- Dr. Atul Malhotra, vice chair of medicine for research, research chief of pulmonary, critical care, sleep medicine and physiology, and the Peter C. Farrell Presidential Chair of Respiratory Medicine at UC San Diego Health in California
This SRS Foundation state-of-the-science webinar is made possible by corporate sponsors Alkermes, Eisai, Takeda, Jazz Pharmaceuticals and Centessa Pharmaceuticals.
