The Somneuro Lab (directed by Dr. Rebecca Spencer) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst is seeking a full-time research assistant for an NIH-funded study of sleep and memory across toddlerhood. This project provides an excellent opportunity to learn many techniques including actigraphy, polysomnography, and behavioral assessments.

The lab and program environment are rich and based in new research facilities. The Somneuro Lab broadly focuses on sleep’s role in memory across development and aging. We are particularly interested in neural mechanisms underlying sleep benefits to cognition and apply multiple tools to address these questions across our work (MRI, EEG, behavioral assessments). Position details:

Minimum qualifications:

  • BA/BS in psychology, neuroscience, or related field
  • Experience recruiting and testing developmental populations
  • Excellent communication skills

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working independently
  • Experience collecting and analyzing EEG
  • Experience assessing memory or sleep in children

Responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in recruiting child/parent dyads to the study
  • Conduct experiments in young children (behavioral and sleep physiology data collection)
  • Support data processing and analysis

Situated between Boston, Albany, and Providence, the lab offers many opportunities to attend lectures and workshops and visit labs in the New England region. The University of Massachusetts joins Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mt. Holyoke College, and Smith College as part of the Five College consortium, which facilitates academic exchanges between these neighboring institutions.
