A NIH-funded postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan to study the mechanistic underpinnings of interactions between sleep homeostasis and sedation in a rodent model. The applicant should have a PhD or equivalent degree in behavioral neuroscience/neurobiology and a proven track record of productivity as evident through published research articles. Working knowledge of rodent stereotactic survival surgery, electroencephalography, and intracranial microdialysis or microinjection is required. Prior experience in analyzing sleep-wake recordings and expertise in molecular/cellular biology is highly desirable. The successful candidate will work in a highly collaborative and collegial environment, and will be supported by active mentoring and any additional training required for the successful completion of the project and trainee's career advancement.

The research project requires extensive use of high performance liquid chromatography and microdialysis for which training can be provided. There is also potential opportunity to participate in brain connectivity studies in animal models (using high-density EEG and possibly neuronal recordings) that are conducted in collaboration with the faculty at the Center for Consciousness Science ( and are aimed at investigating the neural processes underlying consciousness.
